Día de Muertos at the Cloisters

More than 2,700 people gathered at The Metropolitan Museum of Art / Met Cloisters to honor, reflect, and celebrate passed loved ones for The 2nd Annual Día de Muertos Celebration.

This program is co-created with NYC-based community partners to ensure it is of, by, for, and about community. From the ofrenda to the cumbias, from event signage to activities, everything was intentionally bilingual. Language justice is not achieved through translation alone, it is built through shared power, amplified voices, and spaces reclaimed by those to who have been historically excluded.

I extend my deepest gratitude to our NYC community partners, to the families and neighbors of Alto Manhattan and across NYC, and to all the teams across the institution who helped make this celebration possible.

Y gracias, con todo corazón, a Jinelle, Laura, y Victoria for their leadership and commitment in shaping this program with community-centered practices. Thank you to Met Cloisters Education team for their trust and open doors to welcome our local communities. ¡Hasta la próxima!
